How Much Do Air Source Heat Pumps Cost in the UK?

Whether you’re looking to reduce your carbon footprint or just bring down your energy bills, air source heat pumps are a cost-effective solution. But the question for many homeowners is – exactly how cost-effective are they? In other words, how much does an air source heat pump cost?

In this post, we’ll take a closer look at air source heat pump prices and how it affects the cost of your energy bills over time.

Air source heat pump prices

Broadly speaking, air source heat pumps cost between £8,000 to £14,000 in the UK. As with any new installation, the actual price of your air source heat pump will depend on a few factors:

1. Output

Air source heat pumps come with different outputs, generally ranging from 6kW up to 13kW. Those with larger outputs will produce more heat, which is necessary for larger homes or commercial properties. Needless to say, the cost of a larger air source heat pump will exceed the price of a 6kW model.

2. Installation

To remain a permitted development, an air source heat pump must be installed at least a metre from your property’s boundaries to ensure it doesn’t affect any neighbouring properties. It also needs to be on a flat surface, which can be either the ground or a flat roof.

While it can be tempting to choose a provider solely on the air source heat pump price they offer, it’s important to find a company that’s fully accredited, qualified and experienced. This includes:

  • Home Insulation & Energy Systems Quality Assured Contractors Scheme
  • Energy Performance Validation Scheme
  • National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting
  • Microgeneration Certification Scheme
  • Part P Electrical Safety

The cost you get back

Another important factor to consider is how much of the air source heat pump cost you get back. First and foremost, through the reduced cost of your energy bills. After all, having your own source of renewable energy makes you less reliant on the gas or electric heating you’d normally pay for.

On average, it’s estimated that you’ll save around £1,350 every year after having your air source heat pump installed, for an average four-bed detached house. That means, based on the prices outlined above, it could pay for itself in as little as five years.

On top of that, there’s the money you get back through the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). Launched in 2014, the RHY scheme rewards people who generate their own renewable heat. It applies to biomass boilers, solar panels, biomass pellet stoves, ground to water heat pumps and – you guessed it – air source heat pumps.

With 28 payments spread out over seven years, you could make back up to £13,000. By that point, the cost of your air source heat pump has certainly been reimbursed – with plenty to spare.
