Why DIY Solar Panels Are a Terrible Idea

Solar panels are a shrewd investment for any property, allowing you to generate your own renewable electricity without any ongoing costs. That said, they do come with upfront costs – for the panels themselves and professional installation – which many homeowners are keen to sidestep.

DIY solar panels are supposedly a way of achieving that. Rather than paying a professional solar panel installer, you can buy your own materials on the cheap and get the job done in your own time. Unfortunately, that’s not the case – as this post will explore.

Some DIY is dangerous

The first and most important reason DIY solar panels are a bad idea is because of how dangerous the job is – in more ways than one. Fitting solar panels involves work at height, which carries a significant risk without the right training.

On top of that, the panels need to be wired into your home’s electrics. Without extensive training and experience, you could cause serious damage to yourself as well as your home.

They just won’t work well

Even if you (and your home) manage to get through DIY solar panel installation unscathed, the end result is seldom great. There’s no question about it – the most efficient, long-lasting solar panels are those which are installed by professionals.

For one, professionals have up-to-date knowledge about all the latest solar panel products, and which are best suited to your home. Above all else, they can install your panels to the highest standards with a guarantee and insurance-backed warranty to boot.

Less back from government schemes

With DIY solar panels, you’ll typically generate less renewable energy than you would with a top-rate professionally installed system. That means you’ll need more energy from the grid, so you save less money on your bills in the long run.

However, it also means you’ll minimise the amount you receive from government schemes that reward renewable energy generation. Whether it’s the Feed-in Tariff or the Smart Export Guarantee, these schemes are much more valuable with an efficient solar panel system. That’s because it will have greater potential to generate excess electricity which is contributed to the national grid.

More costly in the long run

Let’s face it – the number one reason people consider DIY solar panels in the UK is to save money. Unfortunately, they can’t even do that. While DIY panels might save you money in the short term, you’ll usually end up worse off a few years down the line.

Constant repairs to your system, or even the need for a full replacement, will see any savings completely cancelled out. That could be made worse by any damage to your roof or electrics, not to mention the savings you’ll miss out on by having solar panels that aren’t quite up to scratch. Let’s not forget that professionally installed solar panels can pay for themselves in less than a decade.

Don’t chance it!

If there’s one thing to take from all of the points above, it’s that DIY solar panels are simply not worth the risk. At NBEC, we provide state-of-the-art solar panels throughout South Yorkshire, backed by a 20-year guarantee.

We’re fully trained, accredited with the likes of TrustMark, HIES, NICEIC, and protected by insurance, so you’ll have complete peace of mind that your solar panels will be safe and efficient for your home.
